'Virus' is a general term used to identify a wide range of malicious software. There are many types of viruses, but there are two characteristics common to all - a virus requires a host, and it infects secretly without user approval. Every day, thousands of variants are spawned from a specific virus. The code may change on its own, adapting to different security environments or change how it travels from system to system. Sometimes a programmer may manipulate the code to serve some purpose or for questionable amusement. Our anti-virus software has the capability of detecting viruses based on characteristics as well as signature code, and has proven more effective than many well known anti-virus packages. There is no such thing as fool proof anti-infection software, but if you practice safe browsing habits and use proven security software, you will greatly reduce the risk of your computer becoming infection.

Virus categories:

• Boot Sector Virus: These viruses infect the boot sector on hard disks, floppy disks, and (theoretically) CD's and DVD's.
• Master Boot Record Virus (MBR): Very similar to boot sector viruses, except that they infect the entire MBR (Master Boot Record) instead of just the boot sector.
• File Infector Virus: These viruses infect files which contain executable code. Common files that would be susceptible to this kind of virus are .EXE files (applications) and .COM (command) files.
• Macro Virus: Macro viruses infect certain types of data files. Most macro viruses infect Microsoft Office files such as Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and Access databases.
• Multipartite Virus: Multipartite viruses share the characteristics of more than one virus type, and can infect many different types of files. For example, a multipartite virus might infect both the boot record and program files.
